"Is More Always Better? The Dangers of Excess in Life and Work"

अतिदर्पे हता लङ्का अतिमाने च कौरवाः ।

अतिदाने बलिर्वद्धः सर्वमत्यन्तगर्हितम् ॥


Word meaning:

अतिदर्पे= अति-Excess, दर्पे= arrogance

हता = destroyed

लङ्का = Lanka

अतिमाने = अति-excess, माने- pride

च = also/ and  

कौरवाः= kourava

अतिदाने = अति-excess, दाने= donation

बलिर्वद्धः = बलि: - KingBali, व​द्धः- bound 

सर्वमत्यन्तगर्हितम्= सर्वं – everything, अत्यन्त- excess, गर्हितम्-bad/forbidden

Meaning:

Lanka was destroyed because of too much arrogance

  • Kauravas were destroyed due to too much pride

  • Bali was bound because of too much giving

  • Remember, too much of everything is bad

Excessive arrogance led to Lanka's destruction; an abundance of pride caused the downfall of the Kauravas; Bali was constrained by his excessive generosity; remember, an excess of anything is harmful.

Understanding:

Too much is too bad.
