🌟 Introduction

The thyroid gland may be small, but its influence on the body is profound. When it malfunctions, it can disturb nearly every system—metabolism, energy, mood, weight, skin, digestion, and reproductive health. At Ayurveda Ashraya Hospital, we combine ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern medical insights to offer personalized and effective care for thyroid disorders.

🔬 What is the Thyroid Gland?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. It produces T3 (Triiodothyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine) hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, energy levels, and many other essential functions.

🔍 Common Thyroid Disorders

1. Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)

  • Thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones

  • Most common type, especially in women

2. Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)

  • Excess production of thyroid hormones

3. Goitre

  • Enlargement of the thyroid gland

4. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

  • Autoimmune hypothyroidism

5. Graves’ Disease

  • Autoimmune hyperthyroidism

🧾 Etiology (Causes)

🔹 Modern Perspective:

  • Autoimmune conditions (Hashimoto’s, Graves’)

  • Iodine deficiency or excess

  • Radiation exposure

  • Certain medications (e.g., lithium, amiodarone)

  • Post-pregnancy hormonal imbalances

  • Congenital (birth-related thyroid dysfunction)

  • Tumors or thyroid nodules

🔸 Ayurvedic Perspective:

In Ayurveda, thyroid disorders are not named directly, but their features correlate with Galganda, Agnimandya, Medoroga, and Vishama Agni.Causes include:

  • Agnimandya (weakened digestive fire) leading to Ama (toxins)

  • Imbalance of Doshas: especially Kapha-Vata in hypothyroidism and Pitta-Vata in hyperthyroidism

  • Improper diet (Viruddha Ahara), mental stress, lack of routine, sedentary lifestyle

🧠 Pathophysiology

🔹 Modern Medicine:

  • Disruption of the Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Thyroid (HPT) Axis

  • Low T3/T4 → increased TSH (hypothyroidism)

  • High T3/T4 → decreased TSH (hyperthyroidism)

  • Autoimmune antibodies destroy or overstimulate thyroid tissues

🔸 Ayurveda:

  • Vitiated Kapha blocks Pitta & Vata leading to metabolism issues

  • Ama (undigested food toxins) accumulates and disrupts tissue-level metabolism

  • Leads to Dhatu imbalance, especially Meda (fat) and Rasa (plasma)

⚠️ Signs and Symptoms

🧊 Hypothyroidism:

  • Fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance

  • Constipation, dry skin, hair fall

  • Depression, slow heart rate, irregular periods

  • Puffy face, hoarseness of voice

🔥 Hyperthyroidism:

  • Weight loss despite increased appetite

  • Heat intolerance, sweating, palpitations

  • Anxiety, insomnia, tremors

  • Frequent bowel movements, hair thinning

🩺 Diagnosis

Modern:

  • TSH, Free T3, Free T4 blood tests

  • Anti-TPO, Anti-TG for autoimmune thyroiditis

  • Ultrasound or Scans for nodules/goitre

  • Radioactive Iodine Uptake Test (RAIU)

Ayurveda:

  • Nadi Pariksha (pulse diagnosis)

  • Dosha assessment through Prakriti-Vikriti evaluation

  • Jivha, Mutra, Mala Pariksha (tongue, urine, stool observation)
