वक्रं= Curved
कुण्ठं = Blunt
खण्डं = Broken
खरधारम् = having harsh edge
अतिस्थूलम् = very big / clumsy
अत्यल्पम् = very small
अतिदीर्घम् = Very long
अतिह्रस्वम् = Very Short
इत्यष्टौ = Eti = like this + Ashtou = Eight
शस्त्रदोषाः = Shastra= Sharp instruments + Doshas
अतो = this
विपरीत = Opposite
गुणमाददीत - Gunam = Quality
अन्यत्र = unless
करपत्रात् =for karapatra
तद्धि= there/ that is
खरधारमस्थिच्छेदनार्थम् = Kaharadhaaram= Harsh/rough edges + Asthi = Bones + Chedanaartham = For excision/cutting of
Meaning of the Shloka:
Eight Defects of Sharp instruments are-
Curved
Blunt
Broken
Having harsh edge
Very big / clumsy
Very small
Very long
Very Short
The Sharp instruments should have the opposite qualities as mentioned above except for the Kardhara (Sharp instrument= shastra) which is used for cutting the bones.
